Grameenphone has partnered with Wikipedia to launch a campaign to increase Bangla content in the free encyclopedia. The announcement of the collaboration came at media conference titled “Wikipedia regional contributors meet” at Bishwa Shahitya Kendra on Monday. The campaign will take place from November 27 to December 15 and the campaign is likely to end in February, 2016. The campaign seeks to increase the awareness of Wikipedia and Bangla language as internet driver.
Grameenphone already has about 5 million internet subscribers and they have partnered with Wikimedia Foundation as part of their campaign called “Internet for All“. Now they are trying to ensure that their subscribers have access to internet in the next three-four years. However, it is proving difficult for them to educate the people in the use of internet. Also, mobile phone operators are facing problems in increasing the supply of cheap smartphones and creating quality content in Bangla, that can be used by everybody. Grameenphone has partnered with Wikipedia to encourage local contributors to provide contents in the Bangla. This will encourage the mass subscribers to use the internet, which will be highly beneficial to them. The campaign will also address the parents’ concern on the usage of internet. They are planning to host a seminar that is shed some light on the positive and negative effects of internet.
Currently the country has about 40 million school students. In addition to cheap computers and internet access, emphasis should also be given on providing quality Bangla content to these students. This will in turn empower the society. Wikipedia is urging the youth to create quality Bangla content for Wikipedia. A training program on how to create good Bangla content will also be hosted in the campaign and three best contributors will also be selected from the campaign.
In light of this campaign, the co-founder of Wikipedia is expected to arrive in Dhaka on Thursday, at an invitation to celebrate ten years of Wikipedia in Bangladesh. He will attend two different seminars hosted by Grameenphone. Grameenphone has already opened up a registration link for the seminars and twenty-five participants with the best questions will be invited in the grand event. To fill up the form click here.
