Merging Physical Life With The Digital: Project HoloLens

This truly is an exciting time to be alive.

Not very long ago, our generation, or that before us were growing up watching Sci-Fi films. We pondered and wondered, when will such a come a time when we are able to communicate with people who live galaxies away, and see them projected on to thin air as 3 Dimensional holograms. Holograms (used for communication, or even deception in the battlefield) have been one of the most cliched Sci-Fi ideas which identify “the future”. And it so happens that we are now several steps closer to that very future, with Microsoft’s now earth shattering prototype which could be hitting the market along the same time frame as the Windows 10.

Microsoft has built the most advanced holographic computer the world has ever seen in Microsoft HoloLens. It is equipped with see-through HD holographic lenses which enable you to see all your digital images on screen as a part of the real world in 3D. It also has spatial sound, so you can even hear your holograms behind you. It comes with a built in High end CPU and GPU. There is also a third processor, a Holographic Processing Unit (HPU). The three processors are provided terabytes of data to process by very high end sensors. It relies on voice and gesture commands, and it does the work of Kinect (and a lot more) with a fraction of the energy required. On the right side of the device, there are buttons to adjust volume and contrast.

The device is wireless, and can even be used to sculpt objects which can be made real by a 3D printer. Its bigger than the Google Glass, and far less of a handful than the Occulus Rift. As promising this new piece of tech is, its still in a very early stage. Whether the future is here or not is yet to be seen.
